Midterm elections results: DeSantis DFEATS Gillum in MAJOR red victory in Florida

But it was not so.

DeSantis has represented northeast Florida in Congress since 2012.

In a far less competitive contest, Donna Shalala declared victory in a race for a Miami-Dade district won handily by Hillary Clinton in 2016's presidential election. Furthermore, in the last days of the campaign the polls seemed to move show a gorwing Nelson lead, suggesting that this race would move in the direction of those "fundamental" election factors.

DeSantis addressed his supporters at a watch party in Orlando on Tuesday after winning the election.

"It's like watching an actor who can film the whole scene in one take", she said. "Republicans seem to be more enthusiastic, more energetic than you typically see in these mid-term elections and I think it could be decisive for DeSantis".

"If he doesn't have a photographic memory, it's close", Wiles added. Gravis gives Gillum a 1-point advantage, NBC News/Marist shows him up by 4, Quinnipiac by 7, HarrisX by 4, Emerson by 5, and St. Pete Polls by 5. He too was expecting a victory as he thanked supporters.

DeSantis might not have even made it to the general election without Trump's very early endorsement. In contrast, Gillum in part ran on a corporate tax rate hike. At a recent DeSantis rally, U.S. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue said the race was "cotton-pickin' important".

In the backdrop, ethics scandals involving both candidates drove campaign narrative, though Gillum's was more affected. He's already seen his insurance premiums sky-rocket and says he doesn't "want to be in a high-risk pool". "That will cost you your jobs, that will cause businesses to leave Florida ... it would be a historic mistake".

It was Trump's support, including a July endorsement rally in Tampa, that helped propel DeSantis past a better-funded and more widely known opponent, Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam, in the August 28 Republican primary.

The graphic appeared after a segment in which MSNBC's Joy Reid reported from Tallahassee praising Gillum's "energy" saying people were "excited" to vote for him.

Gillum said he called DeSantis and congratulated him. "The other campaign, they articulated a position of greater involvement of government in your lives and therefore a greater involvement in your wallet". Kamala Harris, all of whom campaigned in the state at Gillum's side.

Gillum's campaign also battled headaches over an Federal Bureau of Investigation probe into possible corruption in Tallahassee during his administration.

DeSantis will take office on January 8, 2019. Gillum, 39, is the mayor of Tallahassee, a husband, a father of three, a FAMU grad- and he's vying to be the Democratic candidate in Florida's gubernatorial race. It was advice that DeSantis found hard to heed.

Gillum had based his campaign around progressive issues.

"I'm not calling Mr. DeSantis a racist", Gillum said during their last debate.

Democrats have cast more than 2.1 million ballots.
