Queen 'asks Meghan Markle mother Doria to Christmas at Sandringham'

Queen 'asks Meghan Markle mother Doria to Christmas at Sandringham'

The move is somewhat unprecedented, as a member outside of the Royal family has not been invited to stay at the Norfolk estate during the Christmas period before.

Queen Elizabeth has asked members of the Middleton family to attend Christmas mass, but never to dine in Sandringham. The Queen had broken protocol for Markle before by inviting her to Sandringham activities when she was engaged to Prince Harry.

A senior royal source told the publication that the unique move was "a very thoughtful gesture".

American social worker Doria was the only member of Meghan's family in attendance at her and Harry's wedding after Thomas Markle (74) was unable to walk his daughter down the aisle due to health reasons, The Sun reports.

This year she's won her first grand slam title, in doubles at the US Open, where she also picked up the sportsmanship award. "I wanted to win today, but I was not really thinking about qualifying for the semifinal", Garcia said.

The source added: "It's a mark of the Queen's respect for Meghan and an acknowledgment that she doesn't have any other relations in this country - unlike Kate who has the support of a very close family". Typically, those invitations are extended after marrying into the royal family.

Meghan and her mum, Doria Ragland, are said to have a close relationship. "She has been to Meghan and Harry's home in the Cotswolds several times and she has stayed with them at Nottingham Cottage".

And she also told the couple she wanted to spend the holidays with them too.

The royal family reportedly exchanges gifts on Christmas Eve, though extravagant presents aren't in the cards here. Instead, the royals give silly gifts - one year, Middleton reportedly even gave Harry a plastic Grow Your Own Girlfriend kit.
