Boeing is said close to issuing warning on 737 Max after crash

Lion - always been dogged by safety problems - has said the Boeing 737-Max 8 suffered a technical issue on the flight just prior to its deadly crash Monday and that it was fixed.

Last night, Boeing issued an "operations-manual bulletin" reminding airlines that their crews should use existing guidelines when dealing with faulty sensor situations such as this one.

The US Federal Aviation Administration has issued an emergency directive, warning of problems in the latest Boeing 737 MAX aircraft that could lead to pilots losing control of the planes.

When these sensors break down, the plane can go into what's known as "aerodynamic stall", a status in which its wings can't produce enough lift and the aircraft starts to dive.

Boeing, based in Chicago, is preparing to issue a safety bulletin to companies operating its new 737 MAX airliners, the model involved in the recent deadly crash in Indonesia, as Bloomberg reports, citing its sources.

Boeing has sent 219 737 MAX jets to customers globally, with 4,564 orders for jets yet to be delivered.

The US planemaker said investigators probing the Lion Air crash off the coast of Indonesia, in which all 189 on board were killed, had found that one of the "angle of attack" sensors on the Boeing 737 Max jet had provided erroneous data.

The plane plummeted into the Java Sea on Oct 29 en route to Pangkal Pinang from Jakarta, killing all 189 aboard.

Earlier this week, investigators said the plane's flight data recorder showed that an airspeed indicator malfunctioned during last week's fatal flight as well as three previous flights.

Boeing added that issuing bulletins or recommendations regarding the operation of its planes is a "usual process". If the problem isn't fixed, it can cause planes to simply fall out of the sky.

The two Indonesian airlines that fly the Boeing 737 Max 8 planes, national carrier Garuda and Lion Air, both declined to comment on the bulletin.

Lion Air is one of Indonesia's youngest airlines but has grown rapidly, flying to dozens of domestic and worldwide destinations.

Airline safety experts said pilots are trained to handle a plane safely if those crucial sensors fail and backup systems are generally in place as well.

In October, the tragic crash of Lion Air Flight JT610 brought the jet back to the forefront the public consciousness.

Authorities were still searching for the cockpit voice recorder, the second so-called "black box".

Certainly, Indonesian search and rescue officials had trouble locating the wreck, despite encountering a large amount of wreckage in the four days leading up to the discovery of the fuselage.
