Trump laid into Acosta - CNN's chief White House correspondent - after the veteran journalist challenged him on Russian Federation.

The CNN statement said the network stood behind Mr. Acosta. You are a very rude person.

President Trump's midterm campaigning focused strongly on a "caravan" of migrants heading through Central America towards the U.S. He claimed it constitutes an imminent invasion and sent thousands of active-duty troops to the southern border with Mexico.

In a statement, White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders called Acosta's behavior "absolutely unacceptable" and said his White House press pass would be suspended "until further notice".
