Democrats scent victory over Trump's Republicans in Congress

Tuesday's midterm elections in the U.S. are likely - however they go - to mark a seismic moment in United States politics. But blue-collar voters and rural America embraced his aggressive talk and stances. Democrat and former speaker Nancy Pelosi serves as House minority leader. Maybe the GOP narrowly holds the House, but Democrats keep the Senate close. But it would be remarkable when you consider this: The GOP's redistricting advantage after the 2010 election was so huge that we wondered whether it was even possible that Democrats could win back the House. If the Democrats win control of the House of Representatives, as many pundits expect, it might make it far more hard for the Trump administration to continue along its current policy agenda, and could lead to a possible roll-back of some of the president's more aggressive trade policies.

Cook said Democrats have a possibility of gaining as few as 20 seats and as many as 45 seats.

Democrats could derail Mr Trump's legislative agenda for the next two years should they win control of the House or the Senate. It wasn't clear what "leaks" he was referring to.

That's because a Democratic house might stifle some of President Trump's more extreme policies, particularly those on trade.

Just 42 percent of registered voters cast ballots in the 2014 congressional midterm elections, the lowest turnout since at least 1964, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

The Republican Party maintained control of the Senate. And a status-quo election would actually set up Democrats very well to take over the chamber when they have much better opportunities in 2020 and 2022.

"How we conduct ourselves in public life is on the ballot", Obama told Democratic volunteers in suburban Virginia.

While men with military backgrounds have always been recruited to run for office, this year's candidates include several female veterans.

Trump, without control of Congress, could decide to triangulate.

Thirty-six of the 50 USA states elect governors this year, including about 10 considered toss-ups.

Democrats themselves sought to root their campaigns in more bread-and-butter issues, such as health-care and what they portrayed as Republican assaults on the popular aspects of Obamacare. He took to Twitter the morning after the split election outcome for the GOP to put Democrats on notice about their threats to investigate him and the administration.

Democrats celebrated a handful of victories in their "blue wall" Midwestern states, electing or re-electing governors in Michigan, Pennsylvania, Minnesota and in Wisconsin, where Scott Walker was defeated by state education chief Tony Evers.

Republicans rolled into the election with a 77-57 House majority.

Another demographic factor key to the Democrats is the number of women voters.

CNN's Acosta owes Trump White House staffer an apology
To Jim Acosta , as he tried to explain the migrant caravan to the president: 'Thank you for telling me that, I appreciate it .'11. He claimed it constitutes an imminent invasion and sent thousands of active-duty troops to the southern border with Mexico.

Alexander Barbel took off today in Manchester to fight with Tony Bellew
You might lose the rounds, but you can try to exhaust him for the second half of the fight. Bellew goes into the fight on Saturday as a 4/1 underdog against the unbeaten champion.

The World's Smelliest Fruit Grounded an Entire Plane in Indonesia
A flight was delayed for an hour after irate passengers complained about a disgusting smell filling the plane cabin. That took nearly an hour and 2 tons were removed, but at the end of it, the plane took off from Bengkulu in Sumatra.

The results were more mixed deeper into Trump country.

And in Kansas, Democrat Sharice Davids beat a GOP incumbent to become the first Native American and gay woman elected to the House. But in Kentucky, one of the top Democratic recruits, retired Marine fighter pilot Amy McGrath, lost her bid to oust to three-term Rep. Andy Barr.

GOP Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana predicted his party would retain a slim majority, saying on election eve: "In the end, we hold the House because of the strong economy".

"The only check right now on the behavior of these Republicans is you and your vote", Obama told supporters in Gary, Indiana, during a rally for endangered Democratic Senator Joe Donnelly.

Some hurt worse than others.

They are vying for the seat being vacated by Republican Sen.

They also attracted a higher proportion of younger voters than at the last midterm elections four years ago and will change the face of Washington.

More than 60 percent of eligible voters took part in the 2016 vote, when the presidential race was on the ballot.

"Too bad, Mike", Trump said of Coffman, before turning on Utah's Mia Love, whose race remained too close to call. 25 percent described health care and immigration as the most important issues in the election, according to AP VoteCast, a national survey of the electorate. Almost 4 in 10 said they were casting ballots to express opposition to him, while just 1 in 4 said their vote was an expression of support. With the economy surging, he also bet big on a xenophobic closing message warning of an immigrant "invasion" that promised to spread violent crime and drugs across the nation.

Mr Kemp looks to defend his party's control of a state Democrats believe could be a presidential battleground in 2020.

What it would mean: If Democrats' House gain is somewhere in the neighborhood of 30 seats, that would be on par with what often happens in midterm elections when the other party has the presidency.

Drew Hammill, an aide to Pelosi, tweeted Tuesday evening that the President called Pelosi at 11:45 p.m. ET "to extend his congratulations on winning a Democratic House Majority". Bernie Sanders and Democrats Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Kirsten Gillibrand of NY and Minnesota's Amy Klobuchar were easily re-elected.

Trump's scorched-earth campaigning came to define the 2018 campaign.
