Malibu On Fire, Evacuated

Malibu On Fire, Evacuated

Approximately 75,000 homes are under evacuation orders throughout Ventura and Los Angeles Counties.

One of the fires broke out Thursday north-west of Los Angeles and roared south, jumping the U.S. 101 freeway early Friday and sweeping into the Santa Monica Mountains.

Fire officials couldn't estimate how many buildings were lost from the so-called Woolsey Fire burning in Los Angeles and Ventura counties, but said they were expected to be significant.

Voluntary evacuations have been added in Ventura County for Lake Sherwood and the area south of Highway 101 and north of Potrero Rd. between Westlake Blvd. and Wendy Dr.in Thousand Oaks.

The blaze that started Thursday morning east of Paradise and decimated the town also spread to the west.

"We thought the fire was going to kill us", she told CNN.

The fire has burned more than 14,000 acres and all of Malibu is under mandatory evacuation.

With their habitat ablaze, wildlife have been also forced out of their homes by the Woolsey Fire.

Scott Maclean, the state's forestry and fire protection spokesman, said a number of civilians and firefighters had been injured in the fire north of Sacramento but it would be days before the authorities knew whether anyone had died. Winds were blowing between 25-30 miles per hour and pushed the fire across the freeway onto Conejo Mountain toward the Pacific Coast Highway.

Evacuation orders are in effect for Paradise, Magalia, Concow, Butte Creek Canyon and Butte Valley.
