One dead, two injured, in Melbourne stabbing incident

A man has killed one person and wounded two others in a knife rampage in Melbourne that police are treating as a terror attack.

As police officers reached the scene they were confronted by a knife-wielding man who tried to attack them.

The street where the auto caught fire is the same one when in January 2017 a fatal but not terror-related incident when a man plowed his vehicle in to pedestrians at a high speed, killing six people and woulding about 30.

One of the stabbed people was dead at the scene and two others were taken to a hospital.

Chilling footage uploaded to social media shows a man attacking police with a knife moments after the vehicle exploded.

The police and State Premier Daniel Andrews asked people to avoid the area.

Speaking at a news conference, Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton said that the suspect had "family associations that were well known" to police and that he was also known to Australia's security agency.

Two police officers arrive nearly instantly to find a blue utility vehicle ablaze, with flames shooting high into the air. One person has been taken to hospital with a neck injury in a suspected critical condition, one with a head injury and a third with unknown injuries.

Counter terrorism police have been notified and are investigating.

Clayton said police had arrived at Bourke Street, a busy shopping thoroughfare, in response to a auto fire.

The assailant had just stabbed three people and was trying to escape police at the time.

The officers were seen trying for at least a minute to detain the man peaceably as his attacks on them continued, before one officer shot him in the chest. "They are in a suspected critical condition", they said.

Premier Daniel Andrews described today's incident as "an evil and awful thing" and condemned it.

Another witness, Markel, told ABC Radio Melbourne he ran out of the store he was working in after hearing there was a fire and found himself next to an injured man.

Police are calling for witnesses to come forward.

One witness said one of the stabbing victims, believed to be a man in his 60s who later died, was stabbed in the face, and that desperate efforts were made to save him.
