157,000 People Evacuated As Fires Burn in Northern, Southern California

There was no estimated time to contain the fire, but officials said they would hold a daily news conference from the same location and time if conditions permit, until the fire is out.

Reporter Laura Anthony, of the local ABC station KGO, shot video of a "firenado" in Paradise Thursday.

To illustrate the extent of "the dry", the town of Paradise, which has been destroyed, received a little more than 2cm of rain since May 1.

Many abandoned their cars on the side of the road, fleeing on foot. "They were abandoned because traffic was so bad, backed up for hours".

Since the fire ignited, at least nine people have been confirmed dead, almost 6,500 homes and 90,000 acres have burned and about 30,000 residents have evacuated, media reports said.

The fire erupted on Thursday near the northwest corner of the city of Los Angeles as the region's notorious Santa Ana winds blew harder, triggering an overnight evacuation of 75,000 homes in Los Angeles and Ventura County.

Pimlott said six major fires are now burning in California, with three (Camp, Woolsey and Hill) designated "critical".

On Friday, the massive blaze spread north, prompting officials to order the evacuation of Stirling City and Inskip, two communities north of Paradise along the Sierra Nevada foothills.

Cal Fire had not reported any firefighter fatalities related to containment efforts on the Camp Fire, nor the two burning in Ventura County, as of 10 a.m. Friday.
