Californian city mourns after bar massacre by troubled ex-marine

It is believed that the gunman was David Ian Long, a 28-year-old military veteran.

Long was in the Marine Corps from 2008 to 2013, reaching the rank of corporal and serving as a machine gunner in Afghanistan, and the sheriff said he may have suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder. Investigators have not commented on whether mental illness played a role in the rampage.

"As soon as I identified where the target was, or where the threat was, I grabbed at least two people around me and yanked them as hard as I could to the nearest exit", he said.

They include Sheriff's Sergeant Ron Helus, who was first on the scene, Cody Coffman, 22, Alaina Housley, 18, Justin Meeks, 23, Noel Sparks and Dan Manrique.

The patrolman dragged his injured colleague out, but he died the following morning in a Californian hospital.

People gathered outside the Rivalry Roasters coffee shop for a vigil for Sean Adler, Thursday, in Simi Valley, Calif. Adler was killed in Wednesday night's shooting at the Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks, Calif.

Also killed was a man who had survived last year's massacre in Las Vegas, Telemachus Orfanos, 27. I don't want to hear about thoughts and prayers.

His mother, Susan Orfanos, spoke about the tragedy to The New York Times, and she told the publication, "He was killed last night at Borderline".
