Deschamps hopes Martial can maintain Man United form

Deschamps hopes Martial can maintain Man United form

After threatening to leave Manchester United in the summer, the Frenchman seems to have convinced Jose Mourinho about his quality and has been the in-form attacker over the last few weeks.

Anthony Martial has been rewarded for his impressive recent form with Manchester United by being recalled to the France squad by coach Didier Deschamps on Thursday.

The 22-year-old who was omitted from the World Champions squad for Russian Federation 2018, will be looking to add to his 18 caps and establish himself with Les Blues with consistent performances, - which Deschamps eluded to.

"It's been a while since he's been in the French team, with good periods and more hard periods", said coach Didier Deschamps of Martial's return to the worldwide fold.

"We're still talking about a young player who, I hope, is in the process of gaining a certain maturity", Deschamps told reporters.

"It's always been Anthony's problem".

"I knew that for him to become a really top player, he needed to overcome some barriers that I put on the road for him".

Mourinho has made it clear that he wants Martial to stay, describing him as a "top talent" who is starting to show the consistency he has promised since his move from Monaco in 2014.

Manchester City full-back Benjamin Mendy, Lyon captain Nabil Fekir and Marseille defender Adil Rami also return to the squad after missing last month's friendly against Iceland and the Nations League win against Germany.

With Thomas Lemar also absent, Barcelona's Ousmane Dembele, as well as Martial, have been preferred to Arsenal's Alexandre Lacazette, while Lyon's Tanguy Ndombele has kept his place in midfield. The latter two are injured.

Martial has six goals in 13 games in all competitions this season and could add to his 18 France appearances when Deschamps' men meet Netherlands and Uruguay later this month.
