Trump rips Macron for proposing new European Union army to defend against US

Trump's talks with Macron at Elysee Palace are likely to cover European concerns about Trump's plans to withdraw the United States from the 1980s Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Agreement and USA renewal of sanctions against Iran. While Republicans slightly expanded their majority in the US Senate, they lost control of the US House of Representatives to Democrats who may use their newfound power to launch investigations into Trump and stymie his agenda.

"I don't know that we're seeing each other in Paris, but we may", Trump said.

"In an environment where threats and upheavals of a geopolitical or climatic nature are multiplying, the initiative must send the message that Europe is ready, that Europe is capable", a French defence ministry official said, according to Reuters.

Mr Macron has been a longstanding critic of Trump.

Macron, an ardent advocate of closer European integration, said a joint European Union military force was needed to wean Europe off American might, not least after US President Donald Trump announced he was pulling out of a Cold War-era nuclear treaty. "There may be a lunch for the leaders".

Trump's brief visit to Europe comes amid uncertainty about the United States relationship with the continent.

He has railed against trade deals with the European Union and has criticised some EU nations, including France, for not spending enough on defence to sustain North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, the decades-old Western alliance formed as a bulwark to Moscow's aggression.

"We have many countries - the leadership from many countries will be there, especially since they heard the United States will be there".

The White House and the Kremlin had previously considered a formal meeting in Paris.

"Great world leaders", he said, are "driven by national interests".

Trump and Macron's early relationship was marked by kisses, frequent meetings and marathon power handshakes.

Macron had made the remark Tuesday but Trump waited until he was in town to trash talk the French president.

Debating whether the United Kingdom should continue to defend its Western European allies, as it did throughout the 20 century, or take a more detached position, RT Howard in the Daily Telegraph argues "there is one compelling reason why our strategic ties with Western Europe now deserve to be closer than ever before".

It's a sign of the increasingly different view Donald Trump and Emmanuel Macron have towards multilateral institutions.

The dividends of Macron's cultivation of Mr. Trump are "modest at best", said Stewart M. Patrick, a fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations.
