Wildfire triggers evacuation order for Malibu

A wildfire that moved so fast firefighters didn't even try to stop it killed five people, authorities said Friday as the blaze quadrupled in size after leveling much of a Northern California town of almost 30,000 people.

The blaze erupted Thursday afternoon in Simi Valley, northeast of Thousand Oaks, not far from where a gunman shot dead 12 people in a mass shooting Wednesday night, spreading quickly, propelled by 70 miles per hour winds.

The Butte County Sheriff's office said the victims were found dead in vehicles that had been burned by the Camp Fire that left a trail of destruction in its path.

The Camp Fire, which broke out on Thursday at the edge of the Plumas National Forest northeast of Sacramento, has since blackened more than 90,000 acres and was only 5 percent contained as of nightfall on Friday.

Calabasas city officials advised residents not under mandatory evacuation orders to prepare to leave by gathering their IDs, medications, important documents, emergency supplies and a change of clothes.

The fire spread so fast and so furiously that hard-pressed firefighters couldn't be everywhere at once. Authorities said earlier the flames had destroyed multiple structures, though it was unclear how many, and it continued to threaten at least 30,000 homes in the two counties.
