NZ to host Womens Rugby World Cup

A last-ditch pitch by Rugby Australia's head of women's rugby Jilly Collins, CEO Raelene Castle and chairman Cameron Clyne to the 42-member Rugby World council in Dublin, proved to be in vain as New Zealand became the first southern hemisphere country to host the event.

Westpac Stadium in Wellington will host the test between the All Blacks and South Africa on July 27 as part of a condensed Rugby Championship, while Auckland will host the Laurie O'Reilly Trophy and Bledisloe Cup in a return of the double-header test match rugby event at Eden Park on August 17.

"We congratulate New Zealand Rugby on its successful bid, and we are sure they will deliver a fantastic tournament in what will be the first Women's World Cup played in the Southern Hemisphere".

"It's also a great complement to New Zealand's ongoing hosting of the 8th International Working Group on Women in Sport secretariat, culminating in the 8th World Conference of the IWG in 2022".

For a format once feared endangered by the rise of sevens, the figures are hugely encouraging, not least because Super W is gearing up for its second season and Wallaroos coach Dwayne Nestor will be looking for the next generation to take to Auckland in 2021.

The Black Ferns defeated England 41-32 in a final at the Kingspan Stadium in Belfast to seal their fifth world title.

The All Blacks will play Australia and Argentina away, which is somewhat puzzling due to the fact they also faced a "2-away, 1-home" scenario back in 2015 when the tournament was last a truncated one.

ATEED General Manager Destination, Steve Armitage says Auckland is an worldwide award-winning world-class host city and hosting the Women's Rugby World Cup is consistent with the region becoming a world centre for women in sport in the next five years. "We know we're going to a country that delivers major events well. the 2011 Rugby World Cup, a British and Irish Lions tour previous year... these guys know how to do it. That's something we will be talking to World Rugby about".

Tew paid credit to the Government for their support, with Black Ferns legend Dr Farah Palmer keen to leverage on much of the good work that is being done by the Government for female sport.

"I don't think that was an issue in the process". That came out in the bid.
