Los Angeles 2018: Hyundai presents its Palisade SUV

The 2020 Hyundai Palisade the new flagship premium three-row SUV from the South Korean carmaker has finally broken cover at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show.

Setting its sights on the Toyota Highlander (Kluger) and Nissan Pathfinder in the U.S. market, the Palisade arrives as the spiritual successor to the Santa Fe XL - a long-wheelbase version of the previous-generation seven-seat large SUV sold Down Under.

A good reason to buy a vehicle such as this is for its carrying capacity, and with all seat rows up, there is 510 litres of space available, which beats a lot of the Palisade's competitors aside from the Explorer (595 litres) - behind the second row seats, there is 1,297 litres of space. At the rear is a vertical LED rear taillamp design.

Inside, the US-spec model will feature a 10,25-inch touchscreen coupled with a 12,3-inch fully digital TFT instrument cluster.

There's also a shift-by-wire system that frees up the centre console by switching out the traditional gearshift for a wand-style control. Seats are finished in premium quilted Nappa leather. And just so you understand we're talking about a big SUV here, there's even an intercom system for communicating with passengers in all three rows!

During an early look at the 2020 Palisade I was impressed with the interior quality and the amount of space inside the cabin in all rows. Captain's chair with air ventilation on the second row option. It also has a Rear Sleep Mode that lets the driver listen to music without any sound going to the second- and third-row speakers. The wider fenders are more pronounced over the Palisade's wheels, which are 18 inches as standard but upgradeable to 20-inchers on some trim levels.

Only one powertrain is available: a 3.8-liter V6 engine capable of 291hp and 355Nm of torque, mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The second and third-row seats get four cup holders and their own USB charging ports.

The Hyundai's HTRAC all-wheel-drive multi-mode system is optional. A safe-exit assist feature uses the blind-spot warning system to lock the doors if another vehicle or, say, a bicyclist is about to pass. There are three driver-selectable modes - Sport, Comfort and Eco - which vary the torque split between the front and rear wheels.

There's a very American look about it, with plenty of straight lines and and bold elements such as the contrasting grille surround and stacked headlight design.

The Palisade also comes standard with a host of safety tech, including adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and rear cross-traffic avoidance, and forward-collision avoidance with pedestrian detection.
