Billions pledged at Global Citizen Festival

South Africa's police minister defended officers on Monday after revellers at a weekend concert dedicated to Nelson Mandela in Johannesburg headlined by Beyonce endured chaos and robberies following the event.

Global Citizen, an advocacy group, campaigns for an end to extreme poverty, and other causes.

While the Global Citizen Festival went off largely without a hitch yesterday, there have been several reports of muggings after it ended.

Concert-goers had to wait several hours for transport to leave the almost 95,000-capacity FNB stadium in Soweto Sunday and there were reports of several muggings and assaults. Many people got tickets to the concert through charity work and petition-signing.

"The safety of our guests is always of paramount importance to us and we understand" the hurt and anger of those accosted by criminals, Global Citizen, an worldwide advocacy group, said on Twitter.

In a recorded video message, Kenya's president, Uhuru Kenyatta, promised more money in the national budget.

Trevor Noah will host the festival with co-hosts Naomi Campbell, Dave Chappelle, Sir Bob Geldof, Gayle King, Bonang Matheba, Nomzamo Mbatha, Tyler Perry, and Forest Whitaker.
