Central Intelligence Agency chief Haspel to brief Senate on Khashoggi killing

Senators from both parties were angry last week that Haspel didn't attend a closed-door session with top administration officials about Khashoggi's killing and the US response, which many senators have said is lacking.

Haspel did not attend a briefing about Khashoggi's killing that was given to all senators last week by Defense Secretary James Mattis and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

"The intelligence agencies do things, conclude things. but then the elected officials are prevented from knowing about this", Paul said.

Haspel's exclusion was described as uncommon for that type of briefing, and especially odd since the Central Intelligence Agency director had been dispatched to Turkey in October to get information about the Turkish investigation into what happened to Khashoggi. The journalist, who had lived for a time in the US and wrote for The Washington Post, had been critical of the Saudi regime.

Trump has said it may never be known who was responsible for the killing, and in public comments - and a long and unusual statement last week - he reinforced the United States' long alliance with the Saudis.

Turkish investigators allege Khashoggi was tortured before he was murdered by Saudi officials in the country's consulate in Istanbul.

He added that it appeared that the Trump administration does not want to recognise evidence of the crown prince's complicity.

Last week, USA senators moved forward with a resolution to end USA support for the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen, a historic step that was widely seen as a rebuke to Trump's unwavering support for the Saudis. "After all, someone's got to do it". Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker, R-Tenn., said there are still ongoing negotiations over amendments to the resolution.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Paul ranted about being denied a briefing with Haspel the latest developments in the investigation of Jamal Khashoggi's death.
