Friends Is Not Leaving Netflix in January 2019

It will likely be included in AT&T's upcoming streaming service.

When the streaming service announced that Friends would be streaming exclusively on Netflix in January 2015, it was one of Netflix's biggest TV series acquisitions to date.

The hit 1990s sitcom, which is still one of the most popular comedies in the U.S. thanks to its availability on Netflix, is leaving the streaming giant on January 1, according to its page on Netflix's website.

Friends will be there for you on Netflix for the foreseeable future.

Fans got upset when they noticed that the Netflix app said Friends would be leaving the streaming service on January 1, 2019. Warner Bros. parent company WarnerMedia is developing its own streaming service for launch by the end of next year.

It comes as Netflix also looks set to lose Disney/Marvel and Warner Bros./DC titles amid the increasingly competitive on-demand market. One of the main reasons Netflix produces so much original content is to have a robust enough library that users won't cancel their subscriptions when stuff like Friends leaves. Separately, Disney is ending its film-output deal with Netflix, starting with 2019 releases, as it gears up to launch Disney+ later next year. You have less than a month to stream the series on Netflix! The FX series might have been a casualty of the Disney-Fox merger, and could signal that other Disney- and Fox-owned shows could be in danger once the merger is complete. But it came with a lofty price tag: Netflix shelled out $118 million (pennies for the service today) for the streaming rights and to digitally remaster every single episode for HD streaming capabilities.
