Mattis says Putin tried to "muck around" in November's midterm elections

Mattis says Putin tried to

"Mr. Putin is clearly a "slow learner" (an expression, often translated as" slowly thinking, " stupid", - ed.).

Mattis, in a speech at the Reagan Presidential Library and during a question-and-answer session afterward, was unyielding in his criticism of Putin.

Referring to last week's naval confrontation near the Crimean peninsula, in which Russian ships seized three Ukrainian ships and two dozen Ukrainian sailors, Mattis criticized what he called Russia's "brazen" violation of a treaty with Ukraine.

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis Saturday said Russian Federation attempted to hack the US midterm elections in November, and does not appear to be backing down its aggression in the Kerch Strait against Ukraine.

Mattis made the remarks at the Reagan National Defence Forum in Simi Valley, California, referring to the 2003 agreement between Russian Federation and Ukraine that allowed ships of both sides free passage through the Kerch Strait, which separates the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov, Xinhua news agency reported.

"No doubt the relationship has worsened", Mattis said about the relationship between the US and Russian Federation.

American politicians, including Donald Trump, voiced concerns prior to November that Russian Federation would try to meddle in the U.S. congressional elections. He recognizes that what he does is actually creates hostility against his people.

"What we are seeing Putin do with his ripping up of worldwide agreements. we're dealing with someone that we simply can not trust", the Pentagon chief added.

CNN chief White House correspondent Jim Acosta said "this is probably the revelation of the day".

Mattis said, in the Indo-Pacific region, we keep our decades-old alliances strong by building new partnerships.
