NYPD tracks down couple who lost ring down grate during engagement

"WANTED for dropping his fiancée's ring in @TimesSquareNYC!" the NYPD wrote on Twitter.

The newly engaged pair, named by police as John and Daniella and said to be from the United Kingdom, were the subject of a mass Twitter search after New York Police Department (NYPD) shared footage of them desperately trying to retrieve the ring from a pavement grate.

It prompted the NYPD to stage an unusual rescue mission - and then launch a Twitter appeal to find the happy, if a bit clumsy, couple.

Video accompanying the tweet showed the couple reacting.

He said he had carried around the ring for two days in order to find the right moment, and had proposed under the trees of Central Park about two hours earlier. After failing to find it, the couple went home to Britain.

The British couple who lost an engagement ring down a Manhattan subway grate are forever grateful to those who helped locate it.

The happy couple made a decision to grab a bite to eat and see the Christmas Spectacular in Times Square when the ring escaped.

They get their ring back, and there's some added spice to their engagement story - a win all around.

They said: "We would like to thank everyone who shared this story!"

Be it fate, or a stroke of good luck, Daniella Anthony and John Drennan are soon to be reunited with their precious piece of jewellery. CNN could not immediately reach the couple for comment. They also put out their helpline number. "So happy it's been found we can't believe it".

'So so happy to have ring back!

"They had a little girl who gave Daniella a big hug and told her not to worry", Mr Drennan said. Thought was gone forever!

Drennan and Anthony said they would give the officers a mention at their wedding, and they'll be returning to NY to lift a pint with the detectives.
