This year's highest-paid YouTube star is just seven years old, making millions off of videos showing him opening boxes and playing with toys.

Ryan's twin sisters haven't been left out of the fun either: they feature in some videos on a related YouTube channel called Ryan's Family Review.

However, both Ryan and Paul boast a similar number of 17 million followers.

The estimate by the Forbes found that Ryan pipped Jake Paul by $500,000 for the 12 months to June.

Forbes measured pre-tax earnings from June 1 2017 to June 1 2018, without fees for agents, managers and lawyers being deducted.

On Monday, Forbes released its annual list of YouTube earners with the channel Ryan ToysReview coming out on top.

Since launching his main channel in 2015, Ryan has amassed more than 17m followers and almost 26bn views.

Michelle Obama's advice for the Duchess of Sussex: Take your time

"I'm entertaining and I'm amusing", Ryan recently told NBC interview, explaining his appeal. Forbes notes that, not surprisingly, Ryan's fans are mostly other elementary school-aged kids.

The remaining $1 million came from sponsored posts. It is "the result not only of how few deals Ryan (or his family) chooses to accept, but also the fact that his pint-sized demographic isn't exactly all that flush".

The toys featured in Ryan's videos often sell out.

A video of Ryan visiting Walmart to look at his own product range has been viewed 14 million times.

Ryan's parents are reportedly putting 15 percent of his earnings away into a bank account until he is a legal adult.

But he still earned nearly $20m, three million more than in 2017.
