House Republican emails were hacked during 2018 midterms

Several senior House Republicans - including Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) ― also did not know about the hack until this week, according to Politico.

The breach occurred under the watchful eyes of the cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike, which the NRCC was paying for "computer support" at the time. There's no indication that Wikileaks was behind the 2018 NRCC hack.

Virginia Senator Mark Warner, the ranking Democrat on the Intelligence Committee, said in a tweet that the NRCC hack demonstrates that such attacks are "not a Republican or Democratic problem".

Politico reported the intrusion was detected in April by an NRCC vendor and reported to the committee, which alerted the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

According to the report, sensitive donor data was not breached during the hack.

The company was granted access to the DNC's servers, which the Federal Bureau of Investigation has never viewed.

Though the Federal Bureau of Investigation was alerted to the attack, the Republican leadership only found out when Politico contacted them with questions on Monday.

The firm's knack for attribution is also in question, as it falsely identified Russian Federation as being behind a hack of Ukraine's artillery systems - a claim that the Ukrainian military itself denied. They believe a foreign agent was behind the hacks.

Party officials said none of the emails had been made public.

The NRCC reportedly paid "hundreds of thousands of dollars" to Mercury and the law firm Covington and Burling to manage the response to the hack.

The National Republican Congressional Committee, which plays a key role in electing new members and holding onto red seats in the House, was a victim of a major cyber attack during the 2018-midterm election.

After the DNC emails were released in 2016, Sen. A security company that monitors the committee's network discovered the intrusion in April, and it alerted the NRCC along with its cybersecurity contractor.
