MLB Rumors: Yankees, Phillies Or Nationals Expected To Sign Patrick Corbin Soon

In Corbin, the Nationals added arguably the most sought-after free-agent starting pitcher on the market this offseason.

According to Dan Federico on Twitter, Patrick Corbin is rumored to now be deciding between the New York Yankees or the Washington Nationals. Corbin's slider, in particular, causes lefty hitters a lot of trouble given his release point and devastating break and should allow him to pitch well throughout his contract.

After a lot of speculation that he was set to sign a six-year deal, Chelsea Janes of the Washington Post dropped the bombshell Nats fans were hoping for, reporting that he was set to sign in D.C. pending a physical. If his source is correct, this would rule the Philadelphia Phillies out of the Corbin sweepstakes.

For a Yankees team that has made starting pitching a priority this offseason, Corbin was an initial favorite to land in the Bronx. If deGrom had not put together such a phenomenal season, Corbin would have likely taken home the NL Cy Young award last season due to his strong overall performance.

I could understand why the Yanks would be hesitant to add in that extra year and if that leads to Corbin signing elsewhere than so be it.

Washington spending a boatload of money on Corbin may reduce their chances of signing Harper.

Comparatively, National League Cy Young award victor Jacob deGrom and Trevor Bauer were the only two players to rank above Corbin in the FIP category. deGrom had a phenomenal 1.99 FIP and Bauer had a solid 2.44 FIP.

Corbin had a spectacular season in 2018, going 11-7 for the Arizona Diamondbacks, with a 3.15 ERA and a bWAR of 4.6, as well as having 246 strikeouts. He went 2-1 with two holds and a 1.61 ERA over 22.1 innings in the playoffs. He had a 3.81 ERA in 111 innings and impressed during Boston's postseason run.
