Pokemon Go Is Adding Trainer Battles To The Game This Month

So far there isn't a precise schedule on when Trainer Battles will land outside "beginning this month", but we'll be sure to let you know if and when we notice the feature go live. Unlike iconic battles with other Pokemon trainers in the classic Gameboy-era and beyond Pokemon games, these trainer battles will not be turn-based.

It was recently revealed that an upcoming update would finally bring trainer battles into the game featuring three new leagues.

The best part is that players can challenge Friends and Best Friends from any distance, though battles between other Trainers will need to be nearby one another. However, one key element from the core Pokémon series that has been missing throughout the game's lifetime is player versus player battles. You have a limited number of these per battle (we had two in the demo), so timing their use properly and considering the Pokemon in play adds a bit of strategy to the simple tapping system. Instead, the trainer battles in "Pokemon Go" will be fast-paced and in real-time. Fast Attacks and Charged Attacks are allowed, and you can even unlock a bonus Charged Attack using Stardust and Candy. Win or lose, "both participants will receive great rewards, including a chance at rare Evolution items".

Players are also restricted to competing in the same Trainer Battle League as their opponent. So, you can battle from anywhere and anytime.

There are no level limitations in order to start a battle. You can only battle with faraway friends you've been friends with for a while-specifically, you have to be Ultra Friends or above in Pokemon Go.

If you want to test your skills before you jump into the treacherous waters of Trainer Battles, you can train with team leaders Spark, Candela, and Blanche to get a feel for the feature. The second attack can be used in any type of battle, and it affords you more flexibility with a Pokemon and the type matchups it's prepared for.
