Police 'Tie Pieces Of The Puzzle Together' In Lyn Dawson Murder

Chris Dawson has been arrested and will be charged over the 1982 murder of his wife, Lynette Dawson.

The cold case is the subject of popular podcast "The Teacher's Pet", which details a troubled marriage leading up to the disappearance and examines the shortcomings of the police response.

The disappearance of Lyn Dawson - a mother-of-two who vanished from Bayview in Sydney's northern beaches - has been an enduring 36-year mystery.

Her husband Chris Dawson, a former PE teacher, moved his schoolgirl lover into the family home just days after his wife went missing.

The new evidence helped police "tie pieces of the puzzle together", NSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller told reporters in Sydney.

Fuller said authorities have not located Dawson's body, and that finding her remains is "not crucial to finalising the matter", but maintained "we certainly won't give up on that search".

Mr Dawson told Lynette's family that she needed time away, and he did not report her missing to police for nearly six weeks.

Greg Simms said he was on the veranda of his Lake Macquarie home when NSW police informed them of today's explosive development.

Once he returns to NSW he will be formally interviewed by police, and is expected to be charged with her murder.

Detectives allege Mrs Dawson was having financial trouble when she disappeared and will argue that, because she had organised a family portrait and her children were due to return to school, she did not plan to disappear suddenly of her own accord.

"As a result of the investigation and as a result of information that has come from the public, this week we received wonderful information from the DPP that there was sufficient evidence to prosecute", he says.

Prior to his wife's disappearance, Chris Dawson and his twin brother Paul had been star players for the Newtown Jets rugby league club.

The former teacher has strenuously denied any involvement in his wife's disappearance.

The family of Chris Dawson has released a statement, defending him.

"We have sold homicide before without identifying the body", he continued.

His family said they were "disappointed" at the decision of the DPP.

"There is clear and uncontested evidence that Lyn Dawson was alive long after she left Chris and their daughters", they said in a statement.

"We are confident with the case", Supt Scott Cook told reporters on Wednesday.

Detectives from the NSW homicide squad began reinvestigating her suspected murder in 2015 and sent a brief of evidence to the Director of Public Prosecutions in April this year.
