Chief financial officer of China's Huawei arrested in Canada

The ministry added it could not provide further details due to a publication ban that was sought by Meng, who is the daughter of Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei, a former Chinese People's Liberation Army engineer.

The woman was apprehended on Saturday and is awaiting the bail hearing scheduled for Friday, Canada's Department of Justice spokesman Ian McLeod told The Globe and Mail.

The case has echoes of the much-publicised probe into ZTE, China's second-biggest telecoms manufacturer, which was subjected to its own sanctions after the US government determined that it had first attempted to trade illegally with Iran and North Korea, and then subsequently failed to follow through on remedies imposed by the US Department of Commerce.

She is being sought for extradition by the United States, he said.

United States authorities have been probing Huawei, one of the world's largest makers of telecommunications network equipment, since at least 2016 for allegedly shipping US-origin products to Iran and other countries in violation of U.S. export and sanctions laws, sources told Reuters in April.

"The Chinese side has lodged stern representations with the USA and Canadian side, and urged them to immediately correct the wrongdoing and restore the personal freedom of Ms Meng Wanzhou". Meng adopted her mother's surname.

Huawei, among the world's largest telecommunications equipment makers, has previously stated it abides by "all applicable laws and regulations where it operates, including the applicable export control and sanction laws and regulations of the UN, US and European Union".

In a statement, Huawei said it complied with "all applicable laws and regulations where it operates, including applicable export control and sanction laws and regulations of the UN, US and EU".

"The company believes the Canadian and U.S. legal systems will ultimately reach a just conclusion".

Officials for the Canadian and US Justice Departments did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

USA authorities are investigating whether Chinese tech giant Huawei violated sanctions on Iran.

This November, New Zealand's government banned its major telecommunications company Spark from using Huawei's equipment, which is described to "have a serious national security risk".

Britain's BT Group said on Wednesday it was removing Huawei Technologies' equipment from the core of its existing 3G and 4G mobile operations and would not use the Chinese company in central parts of the new network.

Trump has threatened to raise tariffs on Chinese goods in response to complaints that Beijing improperly pressures foreign companies to hand over technology.
