‘Iran Has No Plan to Have Missiles Capable of Carrying Nuclear Warheads’

Members of the UN Security Council have so far failed to reach consensus on whether Iran's missile test constituted a violation of the UN Security Council Resolution 2231, adopted in support of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on Iran's nuclear program.

The provision's true intent has often been contested because the diplomatic language - "Iran is called upon not to undertake" - was agreed to at the time of the nuclear deal.

He told reporters traveling with Pompeo that Iran's continued missile development and testing is a threat to the region and beyond and in defiance of U.N. Security Council demands.

"Missile tests. are carried out for defense and the country's deterrence, and we will continue this", Brigadier- General Abolfazl Shekarchi, spokesman for Iran's armed forces, was quoted as saying by the semi-official Tasnim news agency.

British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt called the missile test "provocative, threatening and inconsistent" with the resolution and said Britain was determined "that it should cease".

"France is concerned about Iran's mid-range ballistic missile test last Saturday". France in particular has bemoaned Iranian "frenzy" in developing and propagating missiles and wants Tehran to open negotiations over its missiles, which Hook said were capable of carrying nuclear warheads.

Over the weekend, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo charged that Iran tested a medium-range missile capable of carrying multiple warheads and striking parts of Europe and the entire Middle East.

Pompeo said the Trump administration is "boldly reasserting" the kind of US leadership that helped create the worldwide organizations underpinning the global order since the end of World War II. But the separate continued development of Iran's missile programme is unsafe and provocative.

The United States in May said it was withdrawing from the 2015 nuclear deal and moving to reimpose economic sanctions on Iran, angering Washington's European allies.

On Monday the French president's office echoed the United Kingdom in saying it was deeply concerned and the tests were "provocative and destabilising". Yet, they also neither confirmed, nor denied the test. "The worldwide community can not keep turning a blind eye every time Iran blatantly ignores Security Council resolutions", she added.

Worse still, the U.S. now not only openly forces all nations to violate the terms of resolution 2231, but also threatens to punish them for its implementation.

While the United States has withdrawn from the nuclear deal, Europe - including the UK and France - have remained committed to keeping the agreement alive.

The secretary spoke before formally warning Russian Federation it has 60 days to start complying with a landmark nuclear missile treaty or the USA will abandon the pact, raising concern about Europe's future security. Those launches came a week after an assault by militants on an Iranian military parade in the southern city of Ahvaz killed 25 people.

While all ballistic missile related activities of Iran are in full conformity with the relevant provisions of resolution 2231, it is the United States that is in absolute violation of the very same resolution.

"Furthermore, this ballistic missile activity is destabilising and increases regional tensions", it added.
