Facebook's ranking drops in 'best places to work' list

Glassdoor publishes job listings and also has a separate "employer brand" service where employers tout their company on a website that sits on Glassdoor alongside any reviews. An In-N-Out database administrator said, "They offer great training and have a great support structure", while a software engineer at Procore reported opportunities for career growth. That survey was taken by almost 29,000 employees, the Journal reported, compared with the just 436 Facebook employee reviews on Glassdoor over the past year.

As noted by ZDNet sister site CNET, there are 29 tech companies in the top 100 this year, including LinkedIn in sixth place, Salesforce 11th, SAP 27th, Adobe 30th, Microsoft 34th, Nvidia 36th, VMware 51st, T-Mobile 59th, Cisco 69th, Apple 71st, Texas Instruments 77th, NetApp at 82nd, and HP Inc 87th.

According to Glassdoor, a website that lets employees rank their workplaces, Facebook was the best company to work in the United States in 2018.

Glassdoor calculates its ranking each year for the top U.S. large employers.

The drop in Facebook's ranking comes after a rocky year for the company. In a statement reported by the Journal, the company said "it has been a hard period, but every day we see people pulling together to learn the lessons of the past year and build a stronger company".

The list is based on feedback from employees who submitted a review of their company on Glassdoor between October 23, 2017 and October 21, 2018.

Facebook has suffered a recent string of high-profile missteps, pertaining to data privacy and potential biases. The search giant's ranking is also down from fifth place in 2018. Google and Apple were the only other companies that have made the list each year since its inception. Workers' concerns - and protests - over how the military could use Google's technology contributed to executives' decision to pull a bid for a $10 billion cloud contract with the Pentagon.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai was scheduled to testify before lawmakers on Wednesday, but the hearing is postponed due to the funeral for former President George H.W. Bush.

Anglian Water came in at number 1 for the first time with a rating of 4.5.

Southwest Airlines leaped a number of spots from last year, when it ranked 23rd, to make the top 10 this year. One of the reviews by an Anglian Water Asset Delivery Manager (Lincoln, England UK) said: "The workforce is clearly proud, passionate and really cares about the work they do, which results in a really positive culture and working environment".
