Google Will Be Shutting Down Allo In 2019

According to Google's blog, the company paused investment in Allo earlier this year and introduced some of its core features into Messages, including Smart Reply, GIFs, and desktop support.

"Given Messages' continued momentum, we've chose to stop supporting Allo to focus on Messages".

Rather than viewing Allo as the mistake and waste of time that many people saw it as, Google appears to view the service as a testing ground for features.

Allo development, as slow as it was, has been on hold since Google announced they were re-focusing their messaging efforts on the Rich Communications Services (RCS) powered "Chat" platform in their Android Messages app back in April.

Having said that Allo will function fully throughout March 2019, the company has confirmed that the Allo users will be able to export their conversation history till that time.

Confused? That's normal: Google's messaging strategy is a mess, and it has been for years. Duo will continue being developed as the company says it has seen strong growth across both major smartphone operating systems. The company's also continuing to develop Hangouts into a workplace collaboration app, helping it to rival the likes of Slack. "Allo will continue to work through March 2019". However, the sense here is that Google is carefully using the words that is letting it deny the coming demise of Hangouts, but Hangouts users will definitely find the app changed significantly by the end of the year.

Google had originally hoped that the more "kooky" elements of Allo would make it appeal to millenials, leaving Hangouts to take on a more organisational role for communicating between colleagues.

We want every single Android device to have a great default messaging experience. He goes on to note that Google launched Duo support for iPad, Android tablets, Chromebooks, and smart displays, in addition to the ability to leave a video message. The Enterprise-only services Hangout Chats and Hangout Meets will be made available to consumers in the future.
