Haley Scolds UN on Anti-Semitism as Body Fails to Condemn Hamas

The United Nations General Assembly has rejected a United States-sponsored resolution seeking to condemn Hamas, the Palestinian group administering the besieged Gaza Strip.

The United States has won crucial backing from the European Union, with all 28 countries set to support the USA measure that condemns Hamas for firing rockets into Israel and demands an end to the violence.

The General Assembly took a procedural vote before voting on the resolution, and decided that a two-thirds majority would be needed to pass it.

The last time the USA put forth a motion condemning Hamas, in June, the vote was 62-58 in favor, with 42 abstentions - a smaller plurality that also failed to reach a 2/3 threshold. "Just last Friday there was no decision that resolutions under this same agenda item had to be adopted by a two-thirds vote".

"Before the General Assembly can credibly advocate compromise and reconciliation between the Palestinians and Israel, it must on record, unambiguously and unconditionally, condemn Hamas terrorism", Haley told the body before the vote.

The Palestinians sought to thwart the USA move by presenting an amendment to the U.S. text to include a reference to United Nations resolutions that condemn Israeli settlements, call for negotiations on East Jerusalem and pledge support for the two-state solution.

But before the vote on the US draft resolution, Bolivian Ambassador Sacha Llorenty Soliz withdrew the amendment.

"The United Nations has never once passed a resolution condemning Hamas", Haley pointed out.

Saudi Arabia's UN Ambassador Abdallah Al-Mouallimi, reflecting the Arab view, said the USA resolution would "undermine the two-state solution which we aspire to".

The results of a vote are seen on display boards at the General Assembly hall, on December 21, 2017, at UN Headquarters in NY. "One that directly causes harm to the Palestinian people?"

The overwhelming support for the Irish resolution reflects global support for action "without delay" toward an end to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and a two-state solution.

The two rival resolutions reflect the deep divisions among the 193 United Nations member states over the decades-old Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the failure to end it. Isn't it time to let that go? It also reaffirmed "unwavering support" for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict - issues not included in the US draft.

The outgoing envoy, a staunch defender of Israel, had written to member states on Monday to urge them to vote for the US-drafted text, warning them: "The United States takes the outcome of this vote very seriously".

The European Union, like the United States, considers Hamas a terror group.

Following the vote, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu applauded the "sweeping majority" of countries who voted for the draft condemnation.

The United States put forward the resolution as it prepares to unveil new peace proposals that the Palestinians have already rejected. And he said it would also turn attention away from Israel's occupation, settlement activities and "blockade" - whether in Gaza, the West Bank or east Jerusalem which the Palestinians want as their future capital. She charged the Assembly with a double standard for using a simple majority for other resolutions.
