6 dead, dozens hurt in nightclub stampede on Italy's coast

Six people, all but one of them minors, were killed and about 35 others injured in a stampede of panicked concertgoers at a disco in Italy.

He said he did not have confirmation from survivors that the use of an irritating spray, like pepper spray, had set off the panic.

Local media report around 120 people were injured, including 35 who were taken to hospital.

Fire brigades said the stampede took place in the Lanterna Azzurra nightclub in the town of Corinaldo, near Ancona, on the Adriatic coast, where rapper Sfera Ebbasta was performing.

The dead included three girls and two boys and an adult woman, a mother who had accompanied her daughter to the disco in the town of Corinaldo, Italy.

A teenager who survived the terrifying ordeal told Italian media: "We were dancing and waiting for the concert to start when we smelt this pungent odour".

Italian high schools are usually open on Saturdays, but schools were closed this weekend for the December 8 national holiday of the Immaculate Conception.
