Ukrainian Embassy in Nigeria condemns Russia’s seizure of ships

The Pentagon has requested that the State Department inform Turkey of the possible action, CNN reported Wednesday, citing three anonymous officials.

The report pointed out that the move could potentially increase tensions between the United States and Russian Federation. "We reserve the right to operate freely in accordance with global laws and norms", he added.

For its part the Russian Ministry of Defense declared that its army in Eastern Crimea which Moscow grasped from Ukraine in 2014 administered a military drill with its Pantsir anti-aircraft missile systems.

The planning comes amid heightened tensions between Washington and Moscow on a range of issues.

The United States has called on Russian Federation to release the sailors and return the seized vessels to Ukraine.

Russian Federation intervened as the Ukrainian ships were relocating from the Black Sea port of Odessa to the port of Mariupol in the Sea of Azov. A spokesman told CNN Wednesday that Moscow lays claim to areas that far exceed the 12 miles from the Russian coastline that is guaranteed by global law.

On Nov. 25, three Ukrainian naval ships and more than 20 sailors attempting to sail through the Kerch Strait from the Black Sea to the Sea of Azov were seized by Russian forces for allegedly violating the Russian border. Poroshenko responded by declaring 30-day martial law in much of Ukraine.

In a statement by the Embassy of Ukraine in Nigeria, Mykola Yaremchuk, first secretary of the Embassy of Ukraine said the attack on the ships was carried out during a sea crossing from the port of Odessa to the port of Mariupol, in accordance with the provisions of all effective multilateral and bilateral global treaties and navigation rules. Ukraine also demands the return of the captured navy ships and to compensate for the damage caused.

Ukraine says Russian Federation had blocked traffic around the Kerch Strait, but Russian Federation says the passage has been operating as usual, except for weather-related delays.

Under the rules of the treaty, ships of non-riparian countries can not remain in the Black Sea for more than 21 days.

According to CNN, the last USA ship to enter the Black Sea was the fast transport ship USNS Carson City in October.
