Southwest flight slides off runway in Burbank, California

A Southwest Airlines plane has skidded off the runway during a rainstorm after landing at Los Angeles' Burbank Airport.

There were no injuries reported, FAA spokesman Ian Gregor said.

Flight 278, a Boeing 737-700 that originated in Oakland, came in for a landing shortly after 9 a.m., the Federal Aviation Administration reported on Twitter.

The EMAS consists of absorbing materials created to rapidly slow aircrafts if they travel beyond the runway.

There were 112 passengers and five crew members on the flight, Southwest spokeswoman Brandy King said.

Images shows the EMAS ripped up by the aircraft where it overran the runway.

"We didn't realize what was going on, it was that fast", said a passenger, Gary Scott.

The airport remained open Thursday despite the runway closure, however, officials warned that some flights were canceled or delayed as a result of the incident.

Reported visibility was about one mile with a ceiling of 1,300 feet.

A Southwest Airlines flight traveling from Oakland slid off of the runway at Hollywood Burbank Airport north of Los Angeles amid heavy rain Thursday morning.

Up to a half inch apparently fell in just 60 minutes, and over six hours the area received 1.66 inches of rain when its monthly average is 2.4 inches.
