Man arrested after attacking female McDonald’s worker in a dispute over…a straw

Our reporters have spoken to the McDonald's employee Yasmine James who tells us she has not been fired following this incident, as rumors circulating on social media claim.

Biandudi said the employee told the man it was policy not to have plastic straws out.

"Taylor grabbed an employee who defended herself by punching him". This was a result of a St. Petersburg ordinance passed last month that mandated "plastic straws can be given only upon customer request"- an effort to increase the city's sustainability. Next year, plastic straws will be banned there altogether. The man did not take "No" for an answer and got upset. He grabs a young female clerk by the collar and pulls her over to him, but she lands several blows to his face and arms before another employee separates them. "He said there's no such law".

Rayner-Goolsby said James was "lucky" she wasn't hurt in the attack, but said more needs to be done to protect employees from these situations.

The employee shouted back, "You're fixing to go to jail - you put your hands on me first". "Taylor continued to yell at employees, when the manager asked him to leave the premises".

Video captured by a fellow customer at a St. Petersburg-area location shows what happened when he got a response he didn't like.

Taylor apparently walked to the counter to get a straw, but started screaming at the employees when he could not find any, as per ABC Action News on January 2.

According to Brenda Biandudi, the woman who shot the video on her mobile phone, Daniel Taylor was angry that the store did not have straws in the condiment and walked over to the cashier.

Police said after starting their investigation, they were able to find and take Taylor into custody when officers responding to a report of an unarmed robbery recognized him from the video.

The video amassed millions of views.

Reacting to the incident, Khim Aday from McDonald's Corporate Communications told CNN, "Our highest priority is always the safety and well-being of our employees and customers at our restaurants". I wanted her to keep her job.
