Samsung announce Smart TVs will soon have AirPlay 2 and iTunes support

The move means iTunes movie and TV show libraries will be accessible from 2018 and 2019 smart TVs manufactured by Samsung.

The move will give Apple another revenue source for people who purchase movies and TV shows through iTunes, and signals another potential slot for the company to place its long in the works original video content service, which is plans to introduce as early as this year.

Samsung says the new iTunes app will be available on TVs in more than 100 countries, while AirPlay 2 support, which will allow users to play media from Apple devices directly on their TV, will be available in 190 countries.

The smart TVs will become AirPlay 2 receivers, which marks the first third-party integration for AirPlay 2. The app will also be compatible with Samsung's Smart TV platform, working with Samsung's Universal Guide, Bixby and Search features.

AirPlay 2 support is kind of important, too. It now looks likely that Apple will finally launch its streaming video service at its Worldwide Developer Conference in June, if not before. A partnership with Samsung could help it get that service in front of more eyeballs, including people who might not own Apple phones or tablets. This will allow iPhone and iPad owners to stream their content directly to a Samsung TV without it needing to be plugged in to an Apple TV device (or directly via an HDMI cable).

The folks behind the latest round of Samsung Smart TVs seem to have reached an agreement with Apple to bring a whole lot of content to their sets this Spring.

However, the Apple TV box, which lets owners watch iTunes as well as services such as Netflix, has been adopted by a fraction of consumers due to the rise of cheaper alternatives from Amazon and Google, as well as televisions that have streaming services already built in.
