49ers DB coach Jeff Hafley departs for Ohio State

His departure comes days after co-defensive coordinator Alex Grinch was named the new defensive coordinator at Oklahoma. His contract with Ohio State was set to expire January 31, according to a report from ESPN.

The news comes just a day after Ohio State landed former MI defensive line coach Greg Mattison to become co-defensive coordinator. It was reported past year that Schiano had an opportunity to leave the Buckeyes for the same job under Bill Belichick with the New England Patriots, only for him to turn down that role.

A day after Michigan's defensive line coach, Greg Mattison, left the Wolverines for a job at Ohio State, another of Jim Harbaugh's assistants is set to leave for the Buckeyes. Harbaugh retained Mattison from Brady Hoke's staff. Mattison had been Hoke's defensive coordinator.

As for why, it's not yet clear.

Defensive coordinator Don Brown could also be a candidate for the Temple head coaching job, which reopened when Manny Diaz took over as Miami's new head coach.

Mattison comes to Columbus after spending the last eight seasons at MI.

Urban Meyer told the same story every November about listening to the Ohio State vs. MI game over the loudspeakers at an outdoor shopping mall near Ashtabula when he was a child, and his mother dragged him reluctantly out of the house on the day of The Game.

Mattison, 69, might not be the only MI coach to change sides in the rivalry this offseason. Day was a quarterbacks coach under Kelly in Philadelphia.

If he remains at MI, though, Washington is a candidate to fill the position vacated by Mattison.
