Beijing school attacker injures 20 children

An alleged disgruntled worker used his hammer to attack 20 children inside a Beijing primary school Tuesday before officials were able to end the rampage and arrest him.

The Xicheng district government said in a post on its Weiboaccount that three of the children suffered heavy injuries and were in a stable condition.

The government said the suspect had been apprehended at the scene and an investigation has been launched.

A doctor at the hospital posted on social media: "The mayor today came to the hospital to wait with us while the children were being medically treated".

However, Jia was upset about the arrangement and used his hammer to attack students during class, ' the statement read.

The unnamed man is said to have targeted the youngsters around 11.15am local time at the school in the Xicheng district.

The 39-year-old assailant slashed students while they were returning to the classroom after morning exercises.

Such incidents have forced authorities to increase security around schools and led to calls for more research into the root causes of such acts.

In November, five people were killed when a auto ploughed into a crowd of children outside a north-eastern Chinese nursery.
