USS Cole Bombing Mastermind Killed by US Airstrike in Yemen

The results of the New Year's day attack are still being assessed, including whether Jamal Al-badawi was killed.

Abd al Rahim al-Nashiri, another al Qaeda militant, has been in United States custody since 2002 in connection with the Cole attack.

There is a $5 million reward for information leading to Badawi's arrest.

A USA official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told CNN on Friday that Al-Badawi was struck while driving alone in a vehicle.

Captain Bill Urban, a spokesman for U.S. Central Command, confirmed the airstrike but said they were still working to confirm Al-Badawi's death.

Al-Qaeda operative Jamel Ahmed Mohammed Ali Al-Badawi, who played a key role in the USS Cole bombing almost 20 years ago, is believed to have been killed in a US airstrike in Yemen, officials say.

Badawi was killed in the strike, according to USA and Arab media reports. He was indicted by a US grand jury in 2003 and charged with 50 counts of various terrorism offenses, including murder of USA nationals and murder of USA military personnel.

The Cole, a guide-missile destroyer, was attacked by suicide bombers in an explosives-laden boat while refueling at the Yemeni port of Aden.

The strike took place when al-Badawi was reportedly driving alone.

Jamel Ahmed Mohammed Ali Al-Badawi was wanted in connection with the deaths of 17 Americans who died in the attack on October 12, 2000.

The Associated Press reported that Badawi was then sentenced to death for his role in the USS Cole attack, only to have his sentence reduced to 15 years in prison.

Al-Badawi was detained by Yemeni authorities in early 2003 but escaped from prison soon after.

Following his escape from prison in 2003, Badawi was captured by Yemeni authorities in March 2004 but CBS reported the Federal Bureau of Investigation as saying he managed to escape again in February 2006 after he and other inmates dug a tunnel that led from the prison to a nearby mosque.
