Cleveland Browns Have Found Their Next Head Coach

The Cleveland Browns have identified in-house candidate Freddie Kitchens and Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator Kevin Stefanski as finalists for their head coaching job, reports Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

By now Freddie Kitchens is a familiar name to Browns fans because of how well the team and Baker Mayfield played when he took over the offense.

Another source said the Browns already have decided they are keeping several assistant coaches. The 44-year-old has worked for various teams as offensive position coaches since 2006.

According to ESPN's Field Yates, in the first eight games without Kitchens as OC, Mayfield was 130-of-223 (56.5%) for 1,471 yards, eight touchdowns and six interceptions.

Browns GM John Dorsey spoke highly of Kitchens' ability to improve the offense during his post-season press conference.

It was not only Kitchen's relationship with Mayfield that got him the gig. According to FanSided's own Matt Verderame, the Browns were close to going all-in on former Packers coach Mike McCarthy. "I always felt like I lived life every day like it could be your last, but what an incident like that makes you realize and thankful for are the friends that you have", Kitchens told the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram in November.

And while that may be true, Williams put life back into the Browns during his eight games as head coach.

Ultimately the two settled on Kitchens. They saw the single largest change in offensive DVOA from Week 9 through the end of the season, indicating that Kitchens, Mayfield, Chubb, and company really took off over the second half of the year. This was a solid hire from an organization that was laughed at in the past for some of their coaching decisions.
