Rosenstein expected to leave Department of Justice once new attorney general confirmed

When exactly Rosenstein leaves could shift depending on the timing of Barr's confirmation and the naming of a new deputy attorney general.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein speaks with U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions at a summit about combating human trafficking at the Department of Justice in Washington, U.S., February 2, 2018.

Rosenstein began overseeing special counsel Robert Mueller's probe into whether Russian Federation meddled in the 2016 presidential election when then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself in the matter over his role in Trump's presidential campaign.

If confirmed, Mr Barr will succeed acting attorney General Matthew Whitaker, who replaced former Attorney General Jeff Sessions after he was sacked by Mr Trump.

Trump has frequently railed against the deputy attorney general on Twitter, with the president recently retweeting an image depicting Rosenstein and others behind bars.

Rosenstein also reportedly once discussed secretly monitoring the president without his knowledge, but a source familiar with the situation said that Rosenstein was being sarcastic when he made the purported remarks.

According to Fox News and ABC News, Mr Rosenstein had long planned to leave after two years as deputy attorney general.

Barr's confirmation hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee is set to begin January 15, and The Washington Post reported that Rosenstein does not have a definitive timeline for departure.

If Mr Barr is confirmed, he is likely to take over the role of overseeing the Russian Federation investigation.

She says he wants to help with the transition to a new attorney general.

Barr's nomination is likely to meet heavy scrutiny in light of the ongoing investigation, particularly from Democrats, following reports he had written a memo in June questioning the probe. CNN and CBS News also reported Rosenstein's planned departure. "Whether it's Bob Mueller or Rod Rosenstein or Matt Whitaker or Bill Barr, that investigation's going to be handled appropriately by the Department of Justice".

Trump has denounced the investigation as a witch hunt.

Also, Rosenstein told senators during his 2017 confirmation hearing that he would not remain in his post if he believed that he was being pressured to influence any investigations.
