Suspicious Packages Delivered To Multiple Foreign Consulates In Melbourne And ACT

Australian Federal Police said the packages were being "examined" by emergency services and the circumstances around the incidents are under investigation.

It was not immediately known which countries' diplomatic missions in the national capital, Canberra, were affected.

SYDNEY: Pakistan's mission in Melbourne was among the those global consulates and embassies in Australian cities that have been sent suspicious packages containing white powder, some reportedly marked with the word "asbestos", foreign media reported.

Hazardous material warnings were also shown near the Indonesian, Thai, Greek, Egyptian and Japanese consulates in Melbourne.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) said Australian Federal Police are "dealing" with a report of a suspicious package at the British Consulate General in Melbourne.

Manuela Erb, the honorary consul of the Consulate of Switzerland in Melbourne, told the ABC that they had received a suspicious package at their Ashwood address.

Hazmat and fire crews are seen outside the Indian and French Consulates on St Kilda Road with evacuated workers on the street.

Two fire trucks, a hazardous materials vehicle and police cars attended the Consulate-General of India on St Kilda Road where staff were evacuated, telling reporters they had been told not to comment to reporters.

A New Zealand official told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation the consulate received an envelope with small plastic bags that appeared to contain concrete and asbestos, with "asbestos" written on one of the bags.

Emergency services were first alerted to the packages in the Melbourne locations about 12.30pm.

"All our staff are safe and accounted for".

A spokeswoman for the service said: "We are assisting the Australian Federal Police right now with a number of incidents across Melbourne".
