Trump storms out of negotiations with Democrats on Mexico border wall

But what's really happening at the US southern border? "He says to us, 'Workers are calling me saying, I'll stay out without a paycheck, as long as it takes.' And it's like, well, who?"

The standoff has closed one quarter of the federal government since December 22.

Noting that his administration was doing everything in its power to help those impacted by the situation, Trump said the only solution was for Democrats to pass a spending bill that defends the borders and reopens the government.

Trump has been discussing the idea of declaring a national emergency to allow him to move forward with the wall without getting congressional approval for the $5.7 billion he's requested.

"The fact is, the women and children at the border are not a security threat, they are a humanitarian challenge - a challenge that President Trump's own cruel and counterproductive policies have only deepened", Pelosi said.

Chuck Schumer, the Democratic leader in the Senate, told journalists: "The president just got up and walked out".

"My fellow Americans, today I am speaking to you because there is a growing "humanitarian and security crisis" in our southern border".

About 800,000 federal employees, approximately half of whom are working without pay, have been affected by the ongoing shutdown now in its 19th day.

Hoping to demonstrate flexibility during his almost 10-minute speech from the White House Oval Office, Trump said of the border barrier he wants built: "At the request of the Democrats it will be a steel barrier and not a concrete wall".

Not even Fox News was having Donald Trump's lies about border security following his prime time address on Tuesday night.

Although the address wasn't too dissimilar from his previous arguments in favor of a border wall, it came at a critical time for Congress and the nation as a whole.

The partial shutdown started on December 22 when funding for many federal agencies expired and the US president refused to sign any spending measure from the Congress that did not include Dollars 5 billion for his US-Mexico border wall.

"I've held the hands of the weeping mothers and embraced the grief-stricken fathers".

Trump used emotional language, referring to Americans who were killed by people in the country illegally, saying: "I've met with dozens of families whose loved ones were stolen by illegal immigration". Observing that some people have suggested that a barrier is immoral, Trump asked why do wealthy politicians build walls, fences and gates around their homes.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says the president has "chosen fear" in making the case to the American people for the border wall and Democrats "want to start with the facts". So sad. So bad. "This is about whether we fulfil our sacred duty to the American citizens we serve", Trump said.

The president often highlights such incidents, though studies over several years have found immigrants are less likely to commit crimes than people born in the United States.

He said his administration's proposal also includes technology upgrades to detect drugs and weapons, money to hire more border agents and to increase the number of beds available to house those detained trying to cross the border.
