Mercedes-Benz CLA Revealed - Gets New Interiors And A Tonne Of Tech

The technical spec, according to Mercedes-Benz, includes a decoupled multi-link axle at the rear for reduced noise and vibration, a Direct-Steer system as standard and hydro-mounts at the front.

The diversification of the current Mercedes-Benz A-Class is getting into swing following the revelation of its CLA four-door coupe variation at this year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES). The 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA measures is 48 mm longer and 53 mm wider than its predecessor, while the wheelbase is also increased by 30 mm. The newly designed headlamps and wider front grille on the lower hood give it a sportier character than before. The side windows appear narrower this time and the rear looks cleaner with smaller rear tail lights.

Also, the CLA now gets a wider track (+63 mm front and +55 mm rear) and a lower centre of gravity to aid its cornering ability.

Just like the A-Class, the CLA has grown in size, with the new vehicle being longer and wider than its predecessor at 4688mm long and 1830mm wide, which is 48mm longer and 53mm wider than the previous generation. Mercedes-Benz claims that the CLA continues to have the same drag coefficient of 0.23 as before.

It also introduces Interior Assist, which recognises operational demands from gestures and equips the interior with intelligence, through augmented reality for navigation and understanding indirect voice commands. The effect is of a more menacing auto. Among the Mercedes Benz portfolio, the Long Wheelbase E-Class sedan maintained its sales success across markets and continued to remain the single highest selling model for the brand in January-December 2018 period.

The CLA was revealed in Sin City in Edition 1 launch spec (with all its associated stylistic bits and bobs), and the vehicle is fitted with the firm's 2-litre turbopetrol engine, rated at 165kW and 350Nm and mated to a 7G-DCT dual-clutch gearbox.

Inside, the MBUX infotainment system is fitted - which debuted in the A-Class past year and features the voice-activated "Hey, Mercedes" personal assistant.

However, there will eventually be a broad range of petrol and diesel engines, Mercedes promises, some featuring 4Matic all-wheel-drive.

Alongside the new tech Mercedes-Benz offers in the form of MBUX are a variety of additional packages. Whether you prefer the CLS or the CLA, one thing is undeniable: The new CLA looks far better than the bulbous, stubby outgoing CLA.

The updated MBUX Interior Assist also features interface through non-contact hand gestures.
