Ryder Cup: Captain’s role daunting, admits thrilled Padraig Harrington

Padraig Harrington, Europe's newly-selected Ryder Cup Captain for 2020, has a long and storied history in golf's greatest team event.

"Obviously I'm thrilled to be named the Ryder Cup Captain for 2020", Harrington said at the press conference announcing the Captaincy on Tuesday.

Harrington takes over for Thomas Bjorn while Jim Furyk led Team USA at the 2018 Ryder Cup. He won't be. Nick Faldo was, arguably, the worst Ryder Cup captain in history at Valhalla in 2008, but a six-time Major victor doesn't lose that status on the back of a hard week in a team room.

He has learnt from some of the great European captains and golfing figures - Bernhard Langer, Colin Montgomerie, Paul McGinley - and said he will take little bits from each in a bid to maintain Europe's dominance in the event.

Padraig Harrington says he "thought long and hard" about taking the Ryder Cup captaincy for 2020 on U.S. soil but believes it has come at the right time.

"I really want to be a help".

'It's possibly easier to be Ryder Cup captain at home, but I realise it was good timing in my career and probably the best chance for the team in an global setting, going to the USA having me as captain at this time. "Hopefully I will pull it all together and say the right things at the right time, get a team, get the best out of that team and get a winning performance".

The 2020 Ryder Cup will be played at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin, site of three PGA Championships. He will be 100 percent behind and in that Ryder Cup team, there's no doubt about it.

Harrington spoke of finding that little edge to give Europe the best possible chance of retaining the trophy in Wisconsin, and he'll leave no stone unturned over the next 18 months or so.

Lucky Lincoln: Rare 1943 Penny Could Fetch Over $1 Million at Auction
PCGS CoinFacts, which offers information to all collectors of U.S. coins, estimates that there are only 10 to 15 such pennies. Those planchets went unnoticed when the bins were refilled with zinc-coated steel planchets in 1943, Heritage Auctions said.

Congo: Opposition Leader Tshisekedi Wins Presidential Vote
In order to do so they must appeal to Congo's constitutional court, which has 10 days to hear and rule on any challenges. Main opposition leader Felix Tshisekedi was Thursday named the provisional victor in Kinshasa after a delayed count.

Ramsey set to cash in with Juventus move
This number will make him the club's second-highest earner only behind newest recruit Ronaldo. Unai Emery also appeared to confirm Ramsey would stay for the remainder of the campaign.

But after missing out on automatic qualification for the first time in ten years, a few eyebrows were raised when Montgomerie, a previous Ryder Cup partner, chose him as the final pick for his 12-man side for Wales.

"It's something I did think long and hard about, was it right and it's possibly easier to be a Ryder Cup Captain at home but I realised it was good timing in my career but I also realised it probably was the best chance for the team in an global setting going to the U.S having me as their captain at this time".

Harrington described the captaincy as a "daunting task", admitting that he did some soul-searching to determine whether this was the right time to take the helm in the twilight of a standout career inside the ropes.

It's vital to serve an apprenticeship as a vice-captain so that, when you get your turn in the top job, you know every detail and you also know how important your backroom team is. For the best part of the next two years the 47-year-old will live and breathe the Ryder Cup. When you're a player, you are exclusively concerned with your ability to perform on the biggest stage of all and trying to get your game in optimum shape.

"I think what they are really saying is that they liked what they saw and they would like a continuation of what they have seen and not to rock the boat too much". He's a good guy, well respected, and he's already enjoyed success as a team captain in the Presidents Cup.

Harrington, who hoisted the trophy four times during an illustrious playing career, can only dream his men will unleash such heroics on the greens and fairways in America when he leads them into the fray.

"He is as European as they come".

"You don't get that day in, day out".
