The movie revolves around the story of Manmohan Singh who was the former Prime Minister of India and the decisions he took was ultimately governed by the former president of the Indian National Congress.

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee questioned the timing of the release of the film which is based on a book by Sanjaya Baru, hinting at the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. The Accidental Prime Minister is based on the novel written by Sanjaya Baru who was the media advisor of Manmohan Singh in the year 2004-2008.
