When asked how many pregnant women had been vaccinated, Deyalsingh said pregnant women and health workers have been resisting taking the flu shot and admitted that three pregnant women nearly died from the virus.

The CDC also estimates that between 2.9 million and 3.5 million people have seen a doctor because of the flu since the season began in October.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, most illnesses nationally this season are being caused by a flu strain that leads to fewer hospitalizations and deaths compared to the kind of flu that dominated a year ago.

With the flu now spreading throughout the United States, it's still not too late to get vaccinated.

A total of 17,743 laboratory-confirmed flu cases have been reported, the Public Health Agency of Canada said in its weekly FluWatch report.

So far this season, Newfoundland and Labrador and Nova Scotia have each recorded one death in which the patient had a lab-confirmed case of the flu.

The Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) has already advised people to take precautions to protect themselves from the flu. The agency estimates that between 6.2 and 7.3 million people had been sick with the flu as of January 5, and about half of them had seen a doctor because of it.

Roughly 70,000 to 80,000 have been hospitalized.

These data are derived using the same mathematical model used to generate previous end-of-season estimates.

The predominant strain this year is influenza A H1N1, which officials said tends to have less severe symptoms than the predominant strain that circulated last season.

When the approach, called ARGONet, was applied to flu seasons from September 2014 to May 2017, it made more accurate predictions than the team's earlier high-performing forecasting approach, ARGO, in more than 75 percent of the states studied.

The estimates are based on rates of confirmed influenza hospitalizations that are obtained from a surveillance network that covers about 8.5 percent of the USA population, or about 27 million people, the CDC said. If you are sick with flu-like illness, CDC recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities.
