ANOTHER TERM: Venezuela's Socialist President Sworn-in for SECOND Six-Year Term

"Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro was being sworn in to a second term Thursday amid worldwide calls for him to step down and a devastating economic crisis, but with some long-time friends in attendance both from overseas and at home", writes the Associated Press.

An estimated 2.3 million Venezuelans have fled their nation's hyperinflation, food and medical shortages over the last two years, according to the United Nations.

Governments around the world also described it as illegitimate. But after a government crackdown, fewer people have taken to the streets.

Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro and first lady Cilia Flores stop to greet flag-waving children upon arrival to the Supreme Court for Maduro's inauguration ceremony in Caracas, Venezuela, Jan. 10, 2019.

"Having seized power through fraudulent and anti-democratic elections held on May 20, 2018, the Maduro regime is now fully entrenched as a dictatorship", Freeland said in a statement.

Maduro, meanwhile, retains control of both the military and political institutions.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro was sworn in to the second term on Thursday.

Supporters, many of whom were public servants identified by t-shirts of state agencies, rallied in the center of Caracas to celebrate the new term.

Han said that China and Venezuela are good friends with mutual trust and assistance as well as good partners with win-win cooperation.

"This banner does not belong to me, this banner belongs to the rebellious and sovereign people of Venezuela", said the Venezuelan President.

He was re-elected in May previous year, in a poll that had initially been planned for December. He blames an "economic war" led by the United States and local opposition adversaries for the country's woes.

The vast majority of the opposition boycotted last year's vote on the grounds that it was rigged in favor of Maduro, noting a host of irregularities including Socialist Party tents in which activists offered monetary payments to voters.

"We urge those who support this regime, from every day employees getting by on food subsidies to the Venezuelan security forces sworn to support the constitution, to stop enabling repression and corruption and to work with the National Assembly and its duly elected leader, Juan Guaido, in accordance with your constitution on a peaceful return to democracy", Pompeo said in a statement.

Despite U.S. attempts to destroy the Venezuelan Revolution, begun in 1999 with the coming to power of leader Hugo Chavez (1954-2013), Maduro has reiterated several times the willingness to have relations with the United States based on mutual respect and non-interference in internal affairs.

Thursday's ceremony took place in the Supreme Court rather than the sidelined, opposition-controlled parliament, which has refused to recognise Maduro.

"This inauguration is illegal", said Jose Navarro, 17, a student at a small anti-government protest in the restive western city of San Cristobal.
