Merkel says Germany recognises responsibility for Nazi crimes in Greece

Almost 2,000 police have been deployed to supervise Merkel's visit and authorities have banned demonstrations around the home of Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, where the two leaders met.

The demands of Greece regarding the reparations for crimes of the "inhuman" Nazi invasion of Greece and the occupational loan issue are "legal" and "legally enforceable", Pavlopoulos told reporters. During her first visit to Greece in 2014, Merkel faced major protests and sought to ease tensions with Athens where Berlin was often blamed for biting austerity and bailouts.

Merkel's statements follow those made five years ago by the German president at the time, Joachim Gauck, who publicly asked for "forgiveness in the name of Germany" from the families of the victims of a massacre carried out by the German army during the occupation.

Before departing from Athens on Friday afternoon, Merkel also laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Uknown Soldier in front of the Greek parliament and held talks with main opposition New Democracy party leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

Greece was forced to hand over 476 million reichmarks, which Greek officials have estimated at $69.14 billion (6-10 billion euros).
