Cadillac Takes Aim at Tesla With SUV Priced Below Model X

On the eve of the 2019 Detroit Auto Show, Cadillac has surprised the media with a first look at an upcoming electric crossover SUV, perhaps the first of many electric vehicles to come for the marque. We're told this platform will feature battery and drive units designed for "maximum usability" throughout GM cars across different countries.

"Cadillac's EV will hit the heart of the crossover market and meet the needs of customers around the world", said Steve Carlisle, president of Cadillac. The company did not share any details, however it said it will announced the same "closer to launch". According to the company-issued report, this Cadillac EV will be based on GM's next-gen EV architecture.

The new platform will be flexible, and adaptable to front-, rear- and all-wheel-drive configurations.

But we can surmise a few things from the announcement.

That was counter to the Toyota Prius model, in which an expensive new powertrain was launched in a small, mass-priced car-in part to achieve that car's social goals of reducing overall fuel consumption, which it did.

Cadillac plans on releasing roughly one new vehicle every six months, including a forthcoming new performance sedan; and a refresh of its popular Escalade SUV.

That anomalous model was also followed by GM with its first Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid in 2011.

It'll take the form of a crossover because of course it will, and it will sit on GM's future electric vehicle platform. "The industry is going electric and we all expect the same amount of business", he said.

A year ago, GM CEO Mary Barra told investors the company's electric cars would be profitable by 2021-and the company would move forward on a greater range of electric vehicles with that in mind.
