Iranian cargo plane crash kills 15, leaves 1 survivor

The plane crashed at Fath Airport, which belongs to Iran's powerful paramilitary Revolutionary Guard, when it was meant to land at the nearby Payam International Airport, about 40 kilometres west of Tehran, the Iranian capital.

A flight engineer was the only person on board to survive, Mojtaba Khaledi, a spokesman for Iran's Emergency Information Centre, told the news agency.

The Farsi News Agency reported that a Boeing 707 cargo plane crashed when it ran out of runway while attempting to land at an airport in the city of Karaj, which is near Tehran. Authorities did not immediately offer a reason for the mistake, though they said the Iranian crew had declared an emergency prior to landing.

A spokesman for Iran's civil aviation told state TV earlier that the plane - which was reportedly carrying meat - belongs to Kyrgyzstan.

It is not clear who owned the plane.
