Jayme Closs case: Suspect saw parents as 'barrier' to kidnapping

U.S. teen Jayme Closs defied the odds and stunned the world after surviving an 88-day abduction by a man who is believed to have murdered her parents in her home in rural Wisconsin.

Jake Patterson, 21, is accused of shooting and killing Jayme's parents before abducting the 13-year-old at her Wisconsin home in October.

The town, about 70 miles north of Barron, is where Jake Patterson allegedly held Closs captive at a home. Authorities are working to track their movements over the past three months.

For the past couple of months the community of Barron and beyond has been praying for a safe return of 13-year-old Jayme Closs.

"She was very calm", Peter said. I just reassured her as we walked toward (my neighbor's) house. She is now Jayme's legal guardian.

"We believe Jayme was the target, and he was getting rid of possible barriers to taking her", Fitzgerald said. They claim Patterson shaved his head to avoid being recognised or associated with the crime.

Her alleged kidnapper, Jake Patterson, 21, was expected to be charged today [MON].

Almost three years ago, Patterson worked for one day at the same meat products facility where Jayme's parents worked - the Jennie-O Turkey Store plant in Barron. Authorities say Patterson acted alone.

Investigators say there's no evidence of any online interactions between him and Jayme. Investigators are trying to determine whether he worked at another job in the area.

He is alleged to have broken into her home in Barron, Wisconsin, before murdering her parents and abducting her. The call came in from Denise Closs' cell phone.

The two women hovered around Jayme as they waited for the police to arrive.

Mike O'Brien, a police captain in Chico, California, said: "Certainly there's potential for additional fatalities". The home is being treated as a hazardous materials site, and the investigation is ongoing, O'Brien said.

Jayme described Patterson's vehicle to law enforcement officers and they found him soon after, driving the streets, allegedly hunting her.

The area surrounding the home from which Jayme is believed to have escaped has been blocked off since Thursday. She managed to escape on Thursday with the help from a woman walking her dog.

"He was very quiet, not a troublemaker that I can remember".

Jayme was missing for almost three months and police collected more than 3,500 tips but no hard leads emerged. "And if she doesn't want to talk then I think that's her complete prerogative". "She said that this person usually hides her or hides her when others are near, or when he has to leave the household".

Ten minutes after Jayme was found, Patterson was pulled over and arrested.

Patterson is set to make his initial appearance Monday afternoon local time in Barron County Circuit Court.

When deputies arrested him, he was out looking for Jayme, Fitzgerald said.
